The witches statement is actually wrong. People seem to believe that witches were always burned alive at the stake. This was a punishment that was actually used on Heretics or People who had committed treasonable acts against the King or Church. The most famous Heretic being Joan of Arc. It was believed that a witch came from the Devil, the Devil resided within Flame (Hell) so if the witch or warlock was burnt they were being sent back to their Master, a place that they longed to be. To stop this, the supposed witch or warlock was always Hung.
Another form or torture was the Word of God. The accused Witch was sat upon a chair that was balanced against the weight of the Bible, if the Witch was heavier than the Bible she was innocent. However, because their was no book as heavy as a person , they would weight the Bible down with stones thus making it impossible for the Witch to declare their innocence. To discover if the witch was guilty, they would also PRICK them. This would be a long needle like spike that would be inserted into the flesh of the accused and removed quickly, if the needle showed blood they were innocent, however if the needle was clean they were guilty. But because the needle was always inserted slowly and withdrawn quickly, the wound will only bleed after the needle had left the body, but the needle spike wouldn't show any blood. Also the Pricking stick was normally made from a dull coloured metal, so if blood was on the spike it was disguised. |
